Gujarat Giants beats UP Warriorz by 8 runs in Women’s Premier League 2024 match held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. Deepti Sharma’s heroics goes in vain. She played a brilliant 88-run knock in just 60 balls but failed to overcome the target.
Today Gujarat Giants won the toss and decided to bat first at Arun Jaitley Stadium. They made one change, bringing in Sneh Rana for Mannat Kashyap. Laura Wolvaardt and skipper Beth Mooney gave Giants a brilliant start. Wolvaardt scored 43 runs in 30 balls. After she got out Gujarat batters could not play any significant role. But Mooney played her captain’s knock. She scored unbeaten 74 in 52 balls and took her team to 152/8 in their 20 overs against the Warriorz. In the last over, she hit the best Warriorz bowler Sophie Ecclestione for 21. Before that over Eccelstone had picked up three wickets of 17 runs.
While chasing 153 to win the match Warriorz slipped to 4/3 in 1.2 overs and 35/5 in 6.6 overs. But Deepti Sharma never gave up. She found an able partner in Poonam Khemnar who did her bit too. An unbroken stand of 109 for the sixth wicket nearly pulled it off but Gujarat managed to hold their nerve and won the game by 8 runs. Deepti scored an unbeaten 88 off just 60 balls. Shabnam Md Shakil was out standing today with the ball, picking 3 wickets of 11 runs in 4 overs. She has been awarded as player of the match. Warriorz might be out of the playoffs race now. Though even after the loss, they too is mathematically in with a chance for one spot alongside RCB.
