Rohit Sharma showed his class and elegance en route to a recording-breaking hundred against Afghanistan on Wednesday. He scored 131 in just 84 balls as India beat Afghanistan by 8 wickets with 15 overs to spare in World Cup 2023 match. Multiple records have tumbled by Indian skipper.
The Indian Captain just smashed the Afgan bowlers in the powerplay scoring the fastest World Cup hundred by an Indian. Sharma scored a century from just 63 balls against Afghanistan, breaking the record for fastest century by an Indian player in an ODI World Cup. The previous record was in the name of Indian Legend Kapil Dev. Kapil scored an unbeaten 175 runs off 138 balls against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup at Tunbridge Wells. He got the century in 72 balls. Rohit also completed his half-century off just 30 balls, the second fastest in the tournament.
Rohit Sharma also got his 31st ODI century, 3rd on the list after Sachin Tendulkar(49) and Virat Kohli(47). Sharma overtook Ricky Ponting(30). Rohit also got his 7th World Cup century, highest by an individual, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s 6 centuries. Rohit scored seven centuries in 19 innings while Tendulkar scored six centuries in 44 innings.
Sharma now jointly holds the record for the fastest batter to complete 1,000 runs in ODI World Cups with Australia’s David Warner in 19 innings. He reached a total of 554* sixes across all three formats in his 473rd international innings, surpassing Chris Gayle’s 553 sixes in 551 innings. Sharma’s 131 is the highest score made by an Indian batter while chasing a score in ODI World Cups. The precious record was made by Tendulkar, 127 not out against Kenya in the 1996 World Cup.
